Our Society’s History Initiated by the town librarian, Martha Wright, the Historical Society of Hammonton was formally organized on November 29, 1960. The original purpose was the preservation of the town¹s civil, political and religious history. In 1963 the society began work on a collection of local history, culminating in The Story of Hammonton which was published in 1966. The HSH Museum is located on Vine Street, in downtown Hammonton, NJ. HSH Today Today the Society collects, preserves, maintains and studies historical artifacts, data and memorabilia pertaining to the history of Hammonton and its immediate surrounding areas while making it accessible to visitors interested in obtaining knowledge and pertinent information concerning the town¹s past. Its goal is to enlarge the existing museum; amass a collection to aid in the education and knowledge of the town¹s history; establish regular museum visiting hours; institute a local genealogy information pool; offer a presence of our town¹s proud heritage and to continue to grow and flourish. Town Brief Hammonton is a community of approximately 12000 residents founded in 1866 by a group of New England settlers. It was primarily dedicated to agriculture and eventually made its mark in the national clothing industry. Although its lands are still farmed, its industrial community is now widely diverse. The foundation of Hammonton¹s past was solidly laid with the penchant for purpose and dignity of those New Englander settlers combined with the colorful flair and hearty work ethic brought in by the Italian immigrants, the second influx of new life into the town. |
