School Violence - What can we do? | |
Gangs and gang violence are taking their toll on our children. Research shows that 12 and 13 year olds are most at risk to commit their first crime and they are more at risk to become victims of this national plague.
Now, law enforcement is taking a pro-active approach to teaching kids the probable outcome of gang involvement. G.R.E.A.T., or Gang Resistance, Education, And Training is available now in your child's Atlantic County school.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office and the U.S. Treasury's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms is sponsoring this reality based ciriculum and interactive learning experience. The course is taught by an investigator with years of experience in dealing with children's issues. It is designed for elementary and middle school students in all communities, not just the inner city.
Students are provided an opportunity to discover what happens when gang violence invades their neighborhood and school, and they are taught to resist the pressures of gangs. They'll also be given real life skills for resolving conflicts peacefully.
Best of all, this program is free for any school in Atlantic County which wants it. If this sounds like a program your kids can't live without, call Investigator Leta Washington, at, 645-5908, or call your school administrators and tell them you want the G.R.E.A.T. program in your school.
Every town has it's problem areas. In Atlantic City, the Back Maryland section of the city has, in recent months, been the scene of numerous shootings and other violence. Some residents have described the area as a, "war zone", and Acting Atlantic City Police Chief, Ben Polk recently said that "....people are being held hostage in their own homes, afraid to go outside...". He also vowed that this condition would not stand.
Now, an increased police presence in that section of Atlantic City will put the thugs on notice; police will aggressively hunt those responsible for the violence and remove them from the streets.
The only link missing in this crime fighting plan is you, and without you the plan is doomed. So, if you live in the Back Maryland section of the city, take back the streets.
